Eco-Conscious and People-Centric Supply Chains Meet Consumers’ Demands
Consumers are continuously informed about climate crises around the world—wildfires overtaking entire countries, trash piles swirling around the ocean, rising greenhouse gas emissions. These eco-alarms inspire consumers to incorporate sustainability into every facet of their lives. They are no longer able to turn a blind eye to global environmental issues; they are quick to take action and to support brands who put the environment first.
The New Humanism Powering Consumers’ Spending Habits
As clean beauty becomes all of beauty, we are entering into a “Beauty Renaissance,” underpinned by a new breed of humanism. This new humanism is driven by key consumer desires. These asks by consumers include expecting higher clean standards from brands, a longing for a brighter decade ahead, a belief in inclusion, and the desire to become part of a community dedicated to sustainability even when making purchasing decisions. For example, 73 percent of millennials are willing to pay more for a product that offers complete transparency in all attributes (Label Insights). Consumers understand that sustainability is valuable and are willing to pay the premium so that the Earth can benefit.
An emphasis on sustainability calls for non-profit organizations, like Bonsucro, to certify sustainable and transparent sourcing. Bonsucro is a global industry platform with a vision of establishing thriving, sustainable producer communities and resilient, consistent supply chains. In Aprinnova’s first episode of the Beauty Renaissance Series, Rafael Seixas—Bonsucro’s Membership Manager—explained that Bonsucro achieves this vision through performance improvements, verification, and supporting a global community of sugarcane suppliers.

Bonsucro Is Backed by Data and Poised for Sustainability Success
Bonsucro’s platform is built on two key pillars: a production standard and a chain of custody standard. The production standard is based on metrics for the sustainable farming and milling of sugarcane, while the chain of custody standard ensures the traceability of sustainability claims along the supply chain from the farm to the end user. Together, these create an ethical, sustainable supply chain that supports the United Nations General Assembly’s Sustainable Development Goals.
Sugarcane is the largest agricultural plant by biomass globally. It can be found in over 100 countries, where it grows with no irrigation needed. Over the past 15 years, Bonsucro has been certifying sugarcane for 250 members over 50 countries around the world, or 27 percent of all sugarcane produced globally. In total, they certify 72M tons of sugarcane annually. With so many members, Bonsucro has been able to help the communities of farmers, as well as the brands who use sugarcane-based ingredients by improving the health of employees and the environment.
Brands Benefit from Using Bonsucro-Certified Ingredients
Brands gain a number of benefits when using ingredients like Neossance™ Squalane and Hemisqualane, derived from Bonsucro-certified sugarcane. They can provide consumers with exactly what they are searching for—sustainable clean beauty products that do not harm the environment. The Bonsucro certification adds weight behind a brand’s eco-conscious efforts:
- Traceable sustainability claims from farmer to end user
- Ethical and sustainable practices
- Full supply chain transparency
- Certified fair wages and safe working conditions
- Clarity and credibility for consumers
The renaissance of beauty will require brands to rethink their approach to products on multiple levels: clean formulations, circular packaging, and eco-friendly marketing. Ingredients derived from Bonsucro-certified sugarcane will help brands accomplish the first step of clean formulations. Whether you are a new brand looking to start clean or an established beauty enterprise, Aprinnova is able to help you on the journey to circular clean beauty.
