In 2005, one members of the joint venture, Amyris started developing microbial strains to produce a precursor to Artemisinin, the key ingredient in an effective anti-malarial drug. Funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the project provided technology responsible for production of Artemisinin for more than 120 million malaria treatments to date and growing.
Building on this success, Amyris has been applying its innovative platform to the production of a portfolio of commercial products based on Biofene®, the company’s brand of farnesene. To further its global mission, Amyris initially focused on developing renewable fuels, with goals of helping to reduce the world’s dependence on petroleum and contributing to reductions in greenhouse gas emissions. Amyris also developed and introduced sustainably produced flavors and fragrances, as well as renewable solvents, lubricants and polymers. Now Amyris is revolutionizing the cosmetic industry by providing high performance, cost competitive, sustainable alternatives to ingredients in consumer care products.
Neossance® Squalane is made from renewable sugarcane. It is a sustainable replacement for shark-and olive-derived squalane. It is estimated that 3 to 7 million sharks are killed each year for shark squalane. Due to this, those species are now endangered and their fishing is banned in Europe. Olive squalane, while sourced more sustainably than shark, has been suffering from supply volatility due to olive crop variations. With Neossance® Squalane, we offer a new advanced source that is sustainable, consistent in quality and has a stable supply.
Neossance® Hemisqualane is a sustainable replacement for petroleum-based paraffins and silicone ingredients. In the recent years there has been increased industry pressure to find innovative alternatives with similar sensorial properties and similar or better performance to these ingredients. Amyris is offering a new sugarcane-derived solution to address this demand for more sustainable cosmetic ingredients. Neossance® Hemisqualane is a breakthrough emollient with high spreadability, a light and dry feel, and a great sensorial profile.

Because sugarcane is one of the most globally abundant sources of plant sugars and has low cost, relative price stability, and because of its ability to meet international standards of sustainability. Due to its favorable climate and soil conditions, Brazil is the optimal place on earth for growing sugarcane, making it a widely available energy crop with the highest efficiency.
Amyris, the parent company behind Neossance®, has developed a unique process that enables the creation of high-performance products through renewable sources. Our plant sugar-derived, pure ingredients are just one example of the company’s efforts to create better products for a rapidly growing world ─ in a sustainable fashion. And, our technology platform has also shown capabilities for product production utilizing cellulosic sugars that will lead to additional benefits. In May 2014, we became the first biomaterial producer in Brazil to receive manufacturing process certification by the Roundtable on Sustainable Biomaterials (RSB) and are committed to leading the way in sustainable practices in our industry around the world.
We are working with other stakeholders, such as Bonsucro, the world’s leading sugarcane sustainability standard, to further reduce the impact of our operations on the environment and improve our sustainable practices in the sugarcane industry.

The process used to create products at Amyris is an attractive way to make renewable compounds because it efficiently produces compounds that are difficult or expensive to make by chemical synthesis.
It also replaces compounds traditionally derived from plant sources that are subject to supply variability, interruption and endangerment, and successfully replaces compounds derived from petrochemicals.
Amyris also produces (at commercial scale) renewable jet and diesel fuel, renewable fragrances and solvents with the goal of replacing non-sustainable ingredients around the world.
